ELCA's Two-Decade Journey: A Milestone in Breastfeeding Advocacy

In a significant step towards promoting breastfeeding and maternal health, the Egyptian Ministry of Health has issued a recruitment call for Lactation Consultants to lead committees in units dispensing subsidized baby formula. This move signifies a transformative shift, as these units will now transition into centers for breastfeeding support.

The Egyptian Lactation Consultants Association (ELCA), a pioneer in the field of lactation medicine, has played a crucial role in achieving this milestone. For over two decades, ELCA has been dedicated to advocating for breastfeeding and empowering healthcare professionals to provide optimal care to mothers and infants. The Egyptian Lactation Consultants Association (ELCA) is proud to witness the Egyptian Ministry of Health’s recognition of the crucial role of lactation consultants in promoting breastfeeding. This significant step is a testament to the tireless efforts of ELCA and its members in advocating for the field of lactation medicine.

For years, ELCA has been at the forefront of promoting breastfeeding and supporting breastfeeding mothers. Through various initiatives, including:

  • Training and Certification: ELCA has trained numerous healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and midwives, to become certified lactation consultants. This has significantly expanded the pool of qualified professionals who can provide expert breastfeeding support.
  • Advocacy and Policy Change: ELCA has actively advocated for the recognition of lactation medicine as a subspecialty and has worked closely with policymakers to establish supportive policies and guidelines.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: ELCA has launched numerous public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the benefits of breastfeeding and to dispel myths and misconceptions.
ELCA’s unwavering commitment to promoting breastfeeding has paved the way for this latest development. By empowering healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to support breastfeeding, ELCA is helping to create a healthier future for Egypt’s children.
We commend the Ministry of Health for recognizing the importance of lactation consultants and for taking steps to integrate them into the healthcare system. With this development, Egypt is poised to become a leader in breastfeeding practices, ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.
